AAA: 1.5M New Englanders to hit the road for Memorial Day

Memorial Day traffic in New England should be about 5.4 percent heavier than it was a year ago, according to AAA.

The motor club projects 1.5 million people will travel at least 50 miles by road while another 100,000 will travel by air. The projection is for Thursday to Monday.

The 5.4 percent increase from last year is a result of consumer optimism and lower gas prices, AAA said.

The most common destinations for Connecticut travelers include Atlantic City, N.J., Myrtle Beach, Fla., and Cape May, N.J., according to AAA.
