A year of declines for Foxwoods’ slot revenue

Foxwoods Resort Casino joined Mohegan Sun later Monday posting lower year-over-year June slot revenues, its 12th consecutive month in decline.

Foxwoods, operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, reported June slot revenue of $35.3 million, down nearly 12 percent from the $40 million recorded in June 2018.

The amount slot bettors wagered last month, known as the “handle,” was $436 million, a 12.7 percent dip from the $499.5 million wagered last June.

Foxwoods, which is required to pay the state 25 percent of its slot revenue, said it contributed $9 million to the state’s General Fund last month.

The latest numbers follow year-over-year declines of 2.8 percent in May, 12.1 percent in April and 8 percent in March.

Slot revenue at Foxwoods and Mohegan continue to be plagued, casino officials say, by increased gaming competition throughout the Northeast.

In addition to MGM Springfield, which debuted nearly a year ago, Encore Boston Harbor just north of Boston debuted last month in Everett, Mass. The $2.6 billion resort gambling complex said gamblers wagered more than $93.5 million in its first eight days in operation in June.

Meantime, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission this week announced that MGM Springfield generated less than $20 million in gross gaming revenue in June, its second worst month since its launch in Aug. 2018.
