$730K STEAP aid for Barkhamsted, Thomaston

Two more central Connecticut towns are getting state money to enable them to respond more effectively in an emergency, authorities say.

The state said Barkhamsted and Thomaston will receive Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) emergency management funds for infrastructure projects that will help protect public safety during storms and other emergencies.

Barkhamsted was awarded $230,000 to replace two emergency generators — one at the town’s designated emergency shelter, Barkhamsted School, and the other at the Barkhamsted Highway Garage, which doubles as an emergency operations center.

Thomaston get $500,000 to replace its aging public-safety communications system for police, fire, ambulance, public works, and the local Water Pollution Control Authority.
