$600K grant to fund fair housing monitoring

The Connecticut Fair Housing Center will receive a $600,000 federal grant to improve foreclosure prevention and fair lending programs, U.S. Rep. John B. Larson’s office announced.

The Hartford center, which serves the city and surrounding areas, monitors various programs for compliance with federal laws. The grant is from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

It includes a $325,000 renewal of its private enforcement program to investigate and enforce alleged violations of the federal Fair Housing Act, as well as an additional $301,781 to build its capacity to serve areas with limited English language proficiency.

“It is an honor to be the only organization in the state to receive HUD funding to continue our fair housing testing, investigation and enforcement work, in addition to enabling us to expand our fair lending and foreclosure prevention work,” Erin Kemple, the center’s executive director, said in a statement. “We are particularly looking forward to working with our national partners to ensure that homeowners in foreclosure are not victimized by discrimination when they attempt to modify their mortgages.”
