5 Hartford nonprofits collect $5K ‘mini grants’

Five Hartford social-services nonprofits each will get $5,000 “mini grants’’ as part of The White House’s teen-pregnancy prevention initiative, authorities say.

The agencies are: Community Renewal Team; Restoring Lives Community Development Corporation; Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective; Central Area Health Education Council and; Lawson Chapel Church of Jesus Christ.

The “mini-grants” are part of the $4.5 million received by the city in 2010 to establish a community-wide approach to reduce the rate of teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.

The goal of the President Barack Obama’s program is to reduce teenage pregnancy and teen births by 10 percent by 2015, federal authorities say.
