Hartford and four other Connecticut municipalities are getting $4.9 million in federal aid to safeguard schoolchildren, authorities say.
Hartford was awarded $1.8 million to hire school resource officers, the acting Connecticut U.S. attorney and the Justice Department announced Friday.
Bridgeport got the most $2.3 million to beef up security staffing, equipment and procedures in city schools.
Norwich is getting $500,000, while Farmington will collect $125,000.
Also, Newtown will get $150,000 on top of state and federal funding already provided to fund two school-safety positions, the agencies said. Newtown was the site of last December’s mass shooting at an elementary school that claimed 26 lives.
“Protecting our children and maintaining our schools as a safe and enriching learning environment are critically important,” Acting Connecticut U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly said in a statement.
In all, the Justice Department announced Friday that Connecticut’s allocation is among nearly $45 million issued to fund 356 new school resource officer positions nationwide.
