3-D metal printer recruits CCAT

A New Mexico company that makes 3-D metal printing technology said it will work with the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology and United Technologies Research Center on a publicly backed aerospace project.

Optomec said a federally backed network of additive manufacturing companies known as America Makes has awarded it a $4 million, two-year project to advance the use of 3-D printing to repair aerospace metal components. The project is backed by $2.6 million in public funds.

CCAT and UTC, which are also members of America Makes, join 22 other companies working with Optomec to develop specifications and best practices for repairing aerospace parts with 3-D printing technology.

CCAT said it will receive $163,000 for its part of the work, which will include using Optomec’s 3-D printing technology at its Advanced Manufacturing Center in East Hartford.
