$2M for Hartford’s Capewell brownfield cleanup

Hartford’s former Capewell Horse Nail Factory is getting $2 million from the state to continue cleanup of the brownfield site just south of downtown, authorities say.

State Senator John Fonfara’s office said Monday near-term plans call for environmental remediation of the site, to be followed by future rehabilitation of the existing structure.

The factory building’s interior could then be redesigned to create approximately 90 housing units and 35,000 square feet of retail.

In December 2011, Hartford drew a $450,000 state grant to aid remediation underway of the site at 110 Wyllys St. and Popieluszko Court, in the Sheldon-Charter Oak neighborhood.
