2020 Travelers Championship eyes fanless tournament amid COVID-19 crisis

The Travelers Championship, Connecticut’s premier annual sporting event, will continue as planned in late June, at least for now, but the four-day golf tournament will be held without fans due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The PGA Tour on Thursday morning announced schedule adjustments for the remainder of the 2019-20 FedExCup season in response to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Nathan Grube, tournament director of the Travelers Championship, in a statement following the PGA announcement, confirmed the 2020 event at Cromwell’s TPC River Highlands will be conducted between June 25 to June 28 without fans and broadcasted by CBS and the Golf Channel.

Fans who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will receive a full refund within 30 days, Grube said.

“We appreciate the support of the PGA TOUR, and we will continue to work with them and follow the recommendations and regulations of local, state and federal government agencies to ensure the safety of those essential to conducting the tournament,” he added.

Grube said the tournament is still contributing all proceeds to charity. The event generated approximately $2 million for more than 150 charitable organizations last year, when Chez Reavie held onto a six-stroke lead to capture the 2019 Travelers Championship title.

The tournament, which generates a roughly $68 million economic impact annually for the state, doesn’t release attendance numbers, but several media outlets estimate the tournament annually draws a few hundred thousand spectators.
