2009 Strateg-e Awards Judges

Eleanor Thornton, Assistant Professor of Design, Connecticut Central State University

     Eleanor Thornton is a designer, educator and consultant with over 20 years of experience in the field of design and design-related technologies. Professor Thornton joined the full-time faculty of Central Connecticut State University in 1998. Her work in the field of design-related technology was instrumental in the creation and accreditation of the Department of Design (Graphic/Information Design) at CCSU.

     She has also authored courses in computer applications for graphic/information design, digital imaging, and three-dimensional imaging for graphic/information design. For 10 years she has taught motion graphics, interactive multimedia and print design, and most recently 3-D animation in the Department of Design at CCSU.

     Her students have received numerous awards for excellence in design as well as achieving leadership positions in the fields of graphic design, interactive design and advertising. Her most recent research and creative achievements are in the area of digital games-based learning and immersive virtual environments.

Professor Thornton, together with other collaborators, has recently served the community by the creation of an interactive museum experience for children at the New Britain Museum of American Art. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Vermont College of Norwich University.

 

Gregory P. Garvey, Professor of Interactive Digital Design, Quinnipiac University

Gregory P. Garvey teaches in the Department of Computer Science and Interactive Digital Design at Quinnipiac University and chairs the Committee on Service and Service Learning.

His interactive computer-based installations have been exhibited in the United States, Canada and Europe and have been written about in publications including Wired Magazine, National Geographic, the London Daily Telegraph and others.

From 1999 to 2001, Professor Garvey was a visiting fellow in the arts at Quinnipiac University and also an associate artist of the Digital Media Center for the Arts at Yale University from 2000 to 2001.

Prior to joining Quinnipiac University, he was chair of the Department of Design Art at Concordia University in Montreal and was a member of the board of directors of the Montreal Design Institute.  

Professor Garvey received a Master of Science degree in visual studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT from 1983 to 1985. He also holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
