14 CT towns to get downtown improvement funds

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and other state officials announced Thursday that 14 communities would share just under $5 million in grants to improve pedestrian access and attract business in their commercial districts.

The money can be used for building improvements, signage, lighting and streetscape improvements.

The grants, which are capped at $500,000 per town, are administered by the state’s Department of Housing.

Communities receiving money include Ansonia, Berlin, Burlington, Canaan, Canton, Colchester, Cornwall, Essex, Fairfield, Griswold, Killingly, Mansfield, New Canaan and Westport.
