100-plus people to rappel down Hartford hotel

A fundraiser for drug and alcohol addiction treatment next week will feature more than 100 people rappelling down the Hilton Hartford next week, organizers announced.

Recently launched Norwalk nonprofit Shatterproof said it has partnered with the charitable foundation of the Trumbull Street Hilton’s owner, Waterford Hotel Group, for the July 29 event.

Those rappelling will include people affected by addiction and their friends and family. Local companies are sponsoring the participants, Shatterproof said.

The nonprofit, founded in 2012, is working to raise $100 million to fund national-level programs, according to its website. It is led by Gary Mendell, founder of HEI Hotels & Resorts, also in Norwalk. Mendell’s son, Brian, died in 2011 after a struggle with addition, according to Mendell’s online bio.
