Health Center Article Missed Key Finding

05/12/08

To the editor:

Normally, we would be grateful for the Hartford Business Journal’s interest in one of the UConn Health Center’s capital projects (“UConn Health Center to Get $50M Renovation,” April 21).

Unfortunately, the article’s explanation of the recent Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering report on the future of John Dempsey Hospital completely overlooked the report’s key finding.

Missing from the story was the report’s major recommendation, namely that John Dempsey Hospital be replaced with a new, and perhaps larger, clinical facility on the Health Center’s campus through a collaboration with one or more of the other hospitals in the region.

How could such a fundamental and pertinent fact be excluded?

This critical omission followed an undeservingly negative characterization of the Health Center’s research laboratory renovations. The article’s first sentence implied the project is frivolous, which is clearly off base and inconsistent with detailed information found later in the story.

These necessary infrastructure improvements were recognized as long overdue by the legislative and executive branches of our state government, which approved this project in 2002 as part of the 21st Century UConn program.

We encourage the Hartford Business Journal to take the time to understand subjects like the CASE report and 21st Century UConn. Better stories will result.
